RC hears of ‘air of neglect’ at disability accommodation
8/06/2021
Note: This news update contains details of alleged abuse.
The mother of Daniel, a man with a severe intellectual disability, autism and epilepsy, gave evidence about his experience in accommodation run by the South Australian government. The story focussed on issues of financial control, hygiene and episodes of unexplained bruising.
Danielâs mother recalled her concern upon noticing he wasn't wearing his own clothing and that he exhibited poor hygiene. She made a formal complaint when staff purchased bedding with Daniel's money, only seeking permission after the fact.
