Victorian Gig Worker Support Service to close

In light of recent Commonwealth reforms, the Victorian Gig Worker Support Service is winding down providing information, support and general advice, and will close on 30 June.

The Commonwealth Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes No 2) Act 2023, which was passed in February, gives new minimum rights and protections to gig workers. They will soon be able to pursue matters in the Fair Work Commission and seek the support of the Fair Work Ombudsman on their rights and protections.

Consequently, the Victorian Government is closing the Gig Worker Support Service, which was established when there were no commonwealth supports or standards.

Created last year in response to the Inquiry into the Victorian On-Demand Workforce in 2018, the support service provided education, advice and support to gig workers on their rights and obligations under workplace laws. It supported platform businesses to follow the voluntary standards and referred parties to dispute resolution services, such as community legal centres and the Victorian Small Business Commission.

Although the support service will close on 30 June, you will still be able to get general information from the GWSS website.
