Board and Senior Leader role in Capable Environments, 27 March 2024

This session will focus on the role of Boards and Senior Leaders in developing and supporting Capable Environments to supporting people with developmental disability who have or who are risk of using behaviours that challenge.

The definition of a capable environment (McGill) is:

  • A social/physical context which supports capable behaviour and discourages challenging behaviour.
  • Based on - A sound understanding of the causes of behaviours that challenge, Recognising that behaviours that challenge is a problem of the system not (just) the individual, the ability and opportunity to intervene across the system.
  • Has a focus on improving the person’s quality of support, care, and treatment.

This session will explore the elements of capable environments and practical issues raised at the Australian Society for Intellectual Disability (ASID) conference in November 2023. Themes to be explored will include human rights-based approaches, safety for all, staff training and supervision and link back to the role on Boards and Senior leaders in oversight and ensuring the development of service capability.
