The Disability Royal Commission has found systemic neglect of people with cognitive disability in the health system. The finding is included in a report released on its public hearing on healthcare for people with cognitive disability.

While the report doesn’t make recommendations or any other findings, it does highlight areas of improvement for the disability sector, noting the need for:

Some evidence in the report focuses on improvements to disability services with respect to healthcare. These include disability services promoting healthy lifestyles, facilitating access and communication with health professionals, and receiving training for basic competencies in health care. The report notes the NDIS Commission’s plans for some support in this area – via provider alerts and including some health-related items in the Practice Standards.
