The NDIA has released the Independent Assessment Toolkit detailing the selection of standardised assessment tools for undertaking NDIS Independent Assessments (IA). The NDIA's stated reason for introducing this new approach is to streamline and simplify access and planning decisions for people with disability aged over seven years of age, together with achieving greater consistency in decisions.

The NDIS Independent Assessment Framework identified that no single tool would meet all criteria necessary for a holistic assessment of a person's support requirements under the NDIS. The Toolkit lists six assessment tools which align with the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO ICF).
