What you need to know

  • The Victorian Government is now seeking feedback on the exposure draft of the Disability Inclusion Bill
  • The Bill is a critical part of the government’s broader reform agenda to achieve transformative equality for people with disability
  • NDS will use a session on Friday 30 September to gather feedback to inform our advocacy in relation to the development of the Bill

The Disability Inclusion Bill aims to introduce a proactive approach to reducing and preventing barriers to inclusion. It proposes to establish a Commissioner for Disability Inclusion, whose role would be to promote and monitor progress in advancing disability inclusion in the public sector, local government, universities, and other defined entities.

The Bill would create new obligations for the public sector, local government, public universities and other entities to promote and advance disability inclusion. It would also introduce new provisions to improve transparency and accountability for making and reporting on progress to advance disability inclusion and achieve equality in Victoria.

The Victorian Government is now seeking feedback on the exposure draft of the Disability Inclusion Bill via the Engage website. Consultation runs through to 31 October 2022.

Disability providers are encouraged to contribute to this important consultation. The lived experiences of people with disability will also be crucial in shaping this legislation.
