More than $26 million given to funds, projects and expos as a first step ahead of a formal response to the Disability Royal Commission recommendations.

With governments considering their responses to the Disability Royal Commission and NDIS Review, I have been out advocating on your behalf. I have shared the worrying data in the State of the Disability Sector 2023 report and identified opportunities for the ACT Government. With our close ties to members, NDS is well placed to support and inform the next reform steps. Last month, federal state and territory governments announced their commitment to the NDIS reform process and their formal response will be given by mid-year.

The Annual NDIS Pricing Review has begun deliberating. If you haven’t had time to read the NDS submission, I would encourage you to do so.

The 10-year ACT Disability Strategy and First Action Plan have been launched. These are steps forward and both contain some great initiatives. Particularly pleasing were the inclusion of a nine per cent target for the employment of people with a disability in the ACT public service and the appointment of a Disability Liaison Officer within Housing ACT. Thanks to everyone in the ACT disability sector who contributed to the consultation and development of the strategy.

Our next ACT Disability Sector Quarterly Forum is coming up at the end of May. As always, it will be a great chance for you to catch up with colleagues and pass on your thoughts about the reform process. Register for your tickets today.

Another event coming up in Canberra is the Right on Board Workshop with Dr Alan Hough on 4 June. It’s been updated to include recent recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission and NDIS Review. It is a fantastic opportunity for board members and senior executives to become well-versed in governance, human rights and quality and safeguarding issues. Spots are limited, so don’t miss your chance to secure a seat.

PACE issues continue to badly affect providers. Both at a state and national level, we are passing on your issues and complaints to the NDIA. In the meantime, the NDIA are still holding online information sessions on PACE, which you can register for through their events page or Humanitix.

Also, from your responses at NDS webinars, we have published NDIA responses to frequently asked questions on PACE.

As always, if you have any questions, feedback or concerns please get in touch.
