CEO Update: Major Reforms Coming at a Difficult Time for Providers

A message from NDS CEO, Laurie Leigh

27/02/2023

We can expect that the NDIS Review and Royal Commission will bring reforms to the sector later this year, just as it becomes clearer that providers will have fewer resources to engage with change.

Recent market survey data has underscored what we have predicted for a while: providers are making losses in greater numbers this financial year as the federal COVID-19 payments are wound back.

In addition to the NDS State of the Disability Sector Report finding that 36 per cent of providers expect to make a loss in FY23, financial benchmarking by Ability Roundtable found that, after adjusting for JobKeeper in FY21, 20 per cent of providers had deficits. Elsewhere, Empathia’s analysis showed that the top seven SIL providers on average made a $5.5 million loss.
