Royal Commission looks at skills and specialisation in healthcare for people with cognitive disability
16/12/2020
Over two days, the Royal Commission considered 11 propositions developed in response to evidence from public hearings on healthcare for people with cognitive disability and chemical restraint. Witnesses included health professionals and representatives from educational organisations and industry bodies. A central thread was if and how health education and training addresses communications skills, unconscious bias, and an ability provide adjustments to standard practices.
University representatives compared the virtues of disability-specific modules versus integrating disability content within mainstream units. Regardless, they noted it was often left to individuals to champion the inclusion of disability-related content in curricula.
