RC considers First Nations children in WA secure care and foster care

green banner that reads Royal Commission Update

22/09/2021

The Commission heard about ‘Connor’, a First Nations boy with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and hearing loss.

Connor’s foster carer ‘Leah’ said the WA Department provided limited information about his health, and little training on cultural support or disability, when she took him into care. A focus was Leah’s efforts to have Connor assessed for FASD which the Department resisted, despite multiple practitioners recommending it.
