The People & Culture Project

The People & Culture Project

NDS’s People and Culture Project focused on the growth, management and development of the Tasmanian workforce to deliver services to people with disability, by strengthening human resource management and leadership practices.

The project delivered a series of workshops in 2017 under the name ‘Cultivating a Sustainable Culture’ in seven key areas:

  • Employee engagement
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Values-based recruitment
  • Supporting young trainees
  • Induction and mentoring
  • Supervision and performance appraisal
  • Performance management

The workshops incorporated existing evidence-based and person-centred resources where possible. These have been made available from this page.

Employee engagement is key to sustainably harnessing your workforce’s potential, improving service quality, increasing client satisfaction and reducing costs.

The way people identify themselves and orient themselves in the world is increasingly diverse.

Values-based recruitment provides a process for an organisation and job applicants to determine if there is a mutual fit between them - centred on the alignment of values that are important to the organisation, people who use and access services, and the applicant.

Research indicates that values alignment increases job satisfaction and retention, reduces staff costs and improves service levels - including an increase in quality, safeguarding and client satisfaction.

Induction is the gateway between recruitment and selection. Mentoring is a way to pass on relevant knowledge, skills and wisdom.

Induction and mentoring are therefore perfectly-placed processes to demonstrate - through person-centred practices - that your organisation not only meets legislative obligations, but is developmental, supportive, purposeful, inclusive, fair and safe.

Effective induction and mentoring supports engaged, productive working relationships, employee wellbeing, and client outcomes.

Performance management focuses on reviewing performance in all the capability areas required by a role, and developing the person’s capabilities to meet performance expectations at their job level.

Person-centred performance management builds on existing person-centred information gathered with the staff member through other processes such as recruitment, induction, supervision, performance appraisal and team planning.
