Disability Sector Traineeship Pathways Program

Banner reads: NDS Traineeship Pathways Program

NDS is working with a number of disability service providers across the state to develop the Disability Sector Traineeship Pathways Program. The Program is supported by the Tasmanian State Government and aims to increase the use of traineeships in the disability sector for disability support workers.

Disability support workers provide physical, social and emotional support for people with disabilities through a person-centred approach. The support is across all areas of life including participation, employment, achievement of personal goals and inclusion in the community.

Disability service providers value support workers who are passionate about improving the lives of people with disability and are:

  • Patient
  • Effective communicators
  • Resilient
  • Respectful
  • Creative and problem solvers

The Program involves an extensive recruitment and selection process, and provides a pathway to a traineeship for successful candidates. NDS will conduct the initial screening rounds with participating disability service providers undertaking final interviews for shortlisted candidates they wish to meet. Most employers will require successful candidates to undertake a pre-employment health assessment as well as a current National Police Check.

Successful candidates can expect to commence employment by October 2020 and will have the opportunity to undertake a traineeship in Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) or Certificate IV in Disability. Additional training including Assist Clients with Medication, First Aid and Manual Handling will be provided if applicable. Successful candidates will also be provided with a 12 month license to the NDS Workforce Essentials e-Learning Library comprising a range of courses to enable you to acquire the knowledge skills, and behaviours required to undertake the program.

More information about starting out in the disability sector can be found on the carecareers website.

NDS will be in contact with candidates throughout the process. If you have any questions please reach out to us at or (03) 6212 7300.
