NDS Submission to Infrastructure Victoria urges greater recognition of disability

8/08/2016
- Outlines NDS’s calls for planning approvals for new developments to meet access standards and reflect the need for accessible toilets and adaptive technologies.
- Calls for a push for the adoption of universal design principles across new housing stock and facilitation of new disability housing developments.
- Asks that all public transport infrastructure be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
- Requests that infrastructure-related organisations and government agencies to use ADEs for procurement.
NDS recently made a submission to Infrastructure Victoria’s paper,
‘All Things Considered: Exploring options for Victoria’s 30 year infrastructure
strategy.’ In its submission, NDS recommends
that infrastructure options adopted by Victoria recognise the rights of people
with disabilities to fully access communities and to be enabled to fulfil their
potential as equal citizens.
Similar to NDS’s recommendations for the State Disability Plan 2017-20, NDS’s submission urges that the Infrastructure Strategy requires planning approvals for new developments to meet contemporary standards for access and to reflect the need for accessible toilets and adaptive technologies. NDS also recommends that Infrastructure Victoria pushes for adoption of universal design principles across new housing stock and facilitate new disability housing developments.
Further, NDS recommends that all public transport infrastructure be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act. Finally, NDS' submission supports infrastructure-related organisations and government agencies being encouraged to procure goods and services from Australian Disability Enterprises to support people with disabilities.
