NDS is sad to learn of the death of Jean Hazel Garside MBE OBE at 99 years of age. Jean was the very first NDS staff member, our first Executive Officer, and one of our first Life Members. Her contributions to supporting people with disability have been total and enduring.

Jean was Honorary Secretary of the Australian Advisory Council for the Physically Handicapped (a former name of NDS) from the beginning of our records in 1959.

She then became the first staff member when she was appointed Executive Director of the organisation – a position that she held for 17 years from 1962 until 1979. At the same time, Jean was National Secretary of the International Society for Rehabilitation of the Disabled. Jean became a Life Member of our organisation in 1965.

Jean also ran the Orana Club in Sydney, which was formed by parents and friends of children with disability in 1944, to provide social and educational opportunities for young people. The club aimed to provide a welcoming environment to support children to adjust to everyday life after living in hospital for long periods of time.

On 1 January 1968, Jean was awarded The Order of the British Empire - Member (Civil) (Imperial), "in recognition of service to the handicapped". She was later awarded The Order of the British Empire - Officer (Civil) (Imperial) in 1981, "in recognition of service to the disabled".

Jean passed away peacefully on 5 April 2019 in Sydney. Following a private cremation, a celebration of Jean's life was held on Thursday in St James Chapel, Castle Hill.

NDS offers its condolences to Jean’s family and friends.
