Tony Talks: Embarking on Phase Three of the Sector Development Project!

Hopefully you have all recovered from the Federal Election advertising deluge and can now return to your day jobs uninterrupted.

Whatever you think of the outcome, NDS is pleased to note that, for the first time, the NDIS now has its own Minister and Shadow Minister.

We support this decision to increase accountability for the delivery of the Scheme and as an appropriate recognition of the importance of this once-in-a-generation social reform.

We welcome Stuart Robert as the new Minister and look forward to working with him, the NDIS, DSS and all stakeholders to get the NDIS operating as efficiently as possible.

After three huge years of supporting disability service providers through NDIS transition, the Sector Development Project (SDP) is starting to wind back. Our final project evaluation was completed in May, and I am proud to share some of the main findings with you here.

The ‘NDIS 101’ in-house workshops delivered by our Sector Support Consultants to frontline staff have been received very positively over the past year, with 90 per cent of attendees reporting that the workshop increased their knowledge about the NDIS.

Feedback from providers attending SDP workshops and forums has been consistently positive throughout the project. However, in the last six months, we have seen satisfaction with our events jump even higher, as we have continued to respond to provider feedback and make improvements to our events.

  • 81% of attendees reported the material covered in the event or workshop would have a positive effect on their organisation’s transition, if well-applied. This is an increase from 73% at the last evaluation in November 2018.

Our Helpdesk was also evaluated for the first time since it expanded nationally and the platform was upgraded. Our survey of Helpdesk users found that the new Helpdesk is highly valuable:

  • 80% were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of information and answers provided by NDS.
  • 20% were neutral in their response, and nobody reported that they were dissatisfied with the information and answers NDS provided on the Helpdesk.

I extend my sincere thanks to the whole NDS team in Victoria for the commitment they have shown over the last three years and I also wish to thank all of the providers who engaged with us so enthusiastically over the same period.

I am pleased to advise that, thanks to further funding provided by DHHS, NDIS News will continue in Phase Three so providers can continue to keep abreast of sector updates and forthcoming workshops and learning and development opportunities.

We are well advanced now in planning for the key activities for Phase Three, which are as follows:

  1. Regional and metropolitan ‘NDIS in Practice’ workshops
  2. Subsidised learning and development offerings
  3. Policy work, including NDIS and mainstream interface, workforce forums and Communities of Practice focusing on support coordination and complexity

As always, we look forward to continued positive engagement with providers. Feedback is always welcome and carefully considered.

Finally, a mention of the recent decision by the Victorian Government to incorporate disability services into the Portable Long Service Scheme by way of regulation...

NDS has made a submission opposing the proposal and is currently seeking member feedback on the financial impact of the proposal and lobbying MPs with a view to limiting the financial impact on providers. For support regarding this, and to access the NDS submission, read our news update.

We look forward to bringing you the sector news and offerings in Phase Three.
