Sobering messages from Aged Care Royal Commission report

The Aged Care Royal Commission’s interim report, ‘Neglect’, is a distressing and confronting read. It describes an aged care system that is failing too many of our older, and often vulnerable, citizens. It demonstrates that we, as a society, are not delivering safe and quality care for all those who need assistance as they age; that we can be unkind and uncaring; that we are guilty of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people. It is a confronting read because of the many questions it poses for the disability sector as we move into the spotlight of a Royal Commission. In the foreword to the report, the Commissioners have an important message for all providers:

“Some providers of aged care have appeared before the Royal Commission to be defensive and occasionally belligerent in their ignorance of what is happening in the facilities for which they are responsible. On many occasions when case studies were presented in hearings, providers were reluctant to take responsibility for poor care on their watch. Some providers have shown an unwillingness to accept that they could have, and should have, done better. Others have, rightly, accepted this. Those providers who have demonstrated a commitment to building relationships with people receiving care and their families stood out in sharp relief.”
