As fellow Victorians, I’m sure you share my relief to see things continue to improve across the community and particularly among disability services in terms of COVID-19. This makes all our efforts over recent weeks and months worthwhile. I'm aware of the immense work and effort so many people working in our sector have invested to reign in the virus, and keep the number of cases low. We need to hold on to this good news as the restrictions continue - this is a tough journey, and we all need to keep supporting each other and those around us to keep going, stay patient, and stay safe.

At NDS, we are seeing the focus of service providers begin to shift beyond the imperatives of effective infection control and outbreak management, to considerations of business continuity and planning for operations in the ‘COVID normal’ environment.

Through our Safer and Stronger project, we are bringing people together to consider the challenges and issues facing different disability settings, Boards and Health and Safety representatives. Such meetings offer opportunities to connect with others, share lessons and examples of good practice, and raise issues to be taken up by NDS.

Our fortnightly webinars continue to provide concise updates from DHHS, NDIA, public health and others to assist people to respond to COVID-19 and navigate government guidance and directions. We encourage you to register and attend.

At this time, NDS is also able to offer Victorian disability service providers access to government-subsidised training. This is a great time to build the skills of staff as we all prepare for times ahead.

October is national mental health month. This year has placed such pressure on many of us, leaving many people feeling fatigued and stressed. I encourage you to access some of the multiple resources available, designed to support mental health during these times, including those offered by WorkSafe and Beyond Blue.

Please make sure you look after yourself and those around you.
