NDS welcomes the Premier’s announcement to call a Royal Commission into mental health in Victoria within 100 days of the upcoming state election if re-elected. The Premier acknowledged the high rate of suicide in Victoria and noted that only when people are, “in real crisis do they get tailored individual help. We have a system that simply can't cope and will continue to contribute to tragedy…”

NDS recognises that people with disability are far more likely than the general population to experience mental health issues. Despite this, their access to the specialist mental health services is often limited for a variety of reasons, including the overwhelming demand faced by these services. NDS hopes that a Royal Commission will contribute to improving the access of people with disability to tailored individual services, along with multitude of other groups in the community, who struggle to obtain the mental health services they require.
