People with cognitive impairments and/or behaviour support needs will have a varied understanding of what is occurring during the pandemic and support will need to be tailored to meet individual needs.  Disruption to personalised routines, limited contact with family and friends, more time spent indoors with others and support from unfamiliar staff will all have a significant impact over the coming months.  Behaviour support fact sheetThe NDIS Commission has released a new fact sheet explaining behaviour support and restrictive practices due to COVID-19.  The key messages include:

The fact sheet highlights the importance of involving people in conversations about any changes to their support and maximising their choice and control regarding decisions that affect their lives. It also outlines practical guidance when supporting people with behaviour support needs.Self-isolation will not be easy for many people with cognitive disabilities and/or behaviour support needs and a range of issues are expected to arise including urgent access to alternative accommodation, increased risk of violence and abuse and other potential infringements on human rights.WebinarOn Wednesday 8 April at 1:00pm (AEST), NDS will host a webinar titled: COVID-19: Challenging us in Unprecedented Ways - Positive behaviour support; behaviours of concern; and restrictive practices.Discussion will focus on providing good Positive Behaviour Support, look at what providers are doing organisationally and consider implications in relation to reporting restrictive practices. NDS members and Associates can register for the event here.  This webinar is the third of the COVID-19 series, presented by NDS. Once captioned, all webinars are recorded and available from the member only resources section of NDS's Coronavirus Hub.We encourage you to check the Hub regularly for the latest advice and links to the Australian Government, NDIS and NDIS Commission, and health departments, among others. Collaboration  NDS supports an ongoing, national conversation regarding the anticipated risks to people with disability, their families, staff and providers throughout this time. If providers have developed any resources that they are happy to share with the sector, please send them to encourage providers to continue promoting ongoing conversations amongst teams about upholding the human rights of people with disability using the resources available via the NDS Zero Tolerance webpage including the Recognising Restrictive Practices films.
