The WA State Government has announced a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. The mandatory vaccination program outlines a phased approach to a majority of occupations and workforces within Western Australia, including the disability sector.
Disability sector staff working in residential and non-residential community care services will be required to have their first dose by 1 December 2021 and be fully vaccinated by 31 December 2021.
Limited temporary and permanent exemptions on medical grounds will apply. Exemptions on medical grounds must be obtained from the Australian Immunisation Register using the form specified and be completed by a general practitioner or specialist medical practitioner.
In the event of a lockdown or similar restriction, the policy also sets a requirement that some critical workers will need to be vaccinated to be permitted to work.
Premier Mark McGowan described the policy as a "safe and clear framework for industries and workers, based on our expert health advice."
NDS Acting State Manager Jacquie Daisley, said, “NDS, noting acceptable exemptions, has advocated strongly for mandatory vaccines to ensure as far as possible that every measure is taken to safeguard people with disability and the disability sector workforce. We are pleased that the WA Government has taken this important step to keep people with disabilities and the staff that support them safe.”
NDS will be seeking additional detail from Department of Health and is keen to hear from any members with questions or concerns.
