Disability Royal Commission looks at guardianship laws and disability in Queensland

In Day Two of Public Hearing 30: Guardianship, substituted and supported decision-making, the Commission heard from people with lived experience, advocates, Public Guardians and Public Trustees from Queensland. Â
First to give evidence was the Namok family (pre-recorded) from Thursday Island and Cairns. The family were previously involved in Public Hearing 25: The operation of the NDIS for First Nations people with disability in remote and very remote communities. Mamma Namok is the appointed guardian for her son, Boyzie, who last year suffered a stroke, leaving him with a cognitive disability and mobility challenges. The family outlined difficulties navigating guardian and administration systems and the importance of cultural protocols. Â
