Disability employment critical to NDIS success
The latest research from NDS indicates that strengthening disability employment is critical to the success of the NDIS.
Both open and supported employers are at the forefront of overcoming this major challenge for the sector. Increasing the employment of Australians with disability will require both reform and investment – we need a system that supports job options and career pathways for people with disability. If the private and public sectors can respond by employing more people with disability and purchasing more from the organisations that employ them, Australia could become a world leader in the practice of employing people with disability.
In line with this, NDS has made the following goals part of our to-do list for 2016:
- An increased proportion of NDIS participant plans with employment goals
- Expanded employment opportunities in Australian Disability Enterprises through the implementation of an industry development plan that includes government and private sector procurement
- A National Disability Employment Framework that increases participant choice, invests in career development, provides adequate funding and preserves the best features of the current system.
We will continue to work on these goals over the coming year. For more on how we can work together to achieve them, don’t miss this year’s Disability at Work conference.
