A new Country Fire Authority (CFA) project aims to improve how bushfire preparedness and emergency plans are developed and acted on for those who are at greatest risk in Victoria during a bushfire in their own homes. NDS is contributing to this CFA led, multi-stakeholder project that will build the capability of the community and social services sector. It aims to assist organisations to develop bushfire plans with their clients at greatest risk. The project will also target delivery of CFA fire prevention and preparedness services to people at greatest risk, in partnership with local service providers and local government. This project is in response to the learnings from the Black Saturday bushfires, and recommendations from the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. The CFA is asking for help to understand how widely bushfire planning is undertaken in the disability and community services sectors. The target area for bushfire planning is people living in their own homes in high risk bushfire areas. The CFA wants to learn how to better support bushfire preparedness planning for this cohort.  A short 10-question survey has been developed for this purpose, which should only take five minutes to complete. The data obtained will inform CFA’s decision-making in relation to improving bushfire safety for those at greatest risk. As many providers in Victoria work and travel through high bushfire and grassfire risk areas over the remainder of the bushfire season, we wish to remind you about the CFA online bushfire safety awareness module. This module includes interactive content and videos and takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes to complete. The module is suited to any person who finds themselves working in high risk areas over the summer months. We urge all Victorians to make the time to complete this online session – which could save lives.NDS also suggests that providers sign up to the heat health alert status service provided by the Victorian Government and for worker travelling as part of their job to check the VicEmergency App or website. Please continue to keep NDS informed about any particular issues impacting on your ability to deliver services so that we may assist in any discussions with the NDIA or government.
