Centre-based supports, where to next?

NDS has been working closely with members delivering centre-based supports and community participation to support organisations to transition to NDIS and implement contemporary, evidence-based models of support.A 2018 NDS survey of providers indicated that 30% of community participation providers and 50% of centre-based providers were planning to cease, shrink or not grow their services under NDIS prices. A subsequent 2019 NDS survey [PDF | Word] of members identified a number of disturbing trends - some people with complex needs being exited from services, shifts to use of larger sized groups, and withdrawal from some community-based supports to centre-base supports.NDS has been raising these issues with the NDIA and state government. We have also been continuing to promote evidence-based good practice, with the release of a podcast featuring Professor Chris Bigby on how to design effective supports to facilitate community participation, which articulates key issues identified in research conducted by La Trobe University.Members will be aware of recent amendments to the NDIA group prices. NDS has been receiving mixed reports from members regarding the impact of the current prices, and is keen to further explore the specific challenges and opportunities facing organisations providing centre based disability supports. CEOs and senior managers are invited to a breakfast workshop on Wednesday, 11 September at the NDS office in Parkville, to discuss ways forward for centre-based supports.
