ABC radio’s PM program has broadcast a report on the newly-announced NDIS Fraud Taskforce to deter and respond to fraud committed against the NDIS.

The report explains that fraudulent claims and overcharging for services will be targeted by the taskforce, and that some disability advocates say that the taskforce should not be a priority in the NDIS.

NDS Chief Executive Ken Baker was interviewed for the report. He said the government is getting on the front foot with the taskforce because “there is a risk of fraud when you have a Scheme that will cost $22B a year.”

However, he expressed the need for caution with regulation such as this. “This is an immature Scheme in which the rules are still evolving. Providers within the NDIS often get conflicting advice, so mistakes will be made… It’s important to distinguish between mistakes and fraud.”

He said that choice for people accessing the Scheme is paramount. “At the core of the NDIS is flexibility and choice, and we don’t want additional layers of bureaucratic regulation and red tape stifling flexibility and choice, which is so important to people with disability.”

The ABC also interviewed former Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes and Dr Katherine Flynn from the University of Wollongong, with input from Minister for Social Services Dan Tehan and Opposition leader Bill Shorten.
