Understanding the disability workforce is important as we plan ahead for a fully implemented NDIS world. The government estimates a 120% increase in full time equivalent (FTE) staff between 2014-15 and 2019-20 when the total number will be around 160,000. But who the workers are, who will employ them and under what arrangements are a work in progress.

Similarly, while the NDIS is creating more jobs in rural communities, the pace and patterns of growth are not well understood.

NDS has created the Workforce Census through which the sector can track its own trends, and you will find this under Benchmarking your workforce.

The NDS Workforce Census data collection is a unique resource for the disability sector. Workforce Census supports organisations in monitoring the workforce and sector changes making informed decisions about workforce development and planning for the future.

The Australian Government Labour Market Information Portal provides up-to-date labour market data, resources and links to support employers to make informed decisions.

The Analysing Time Guide describes the different elements that comprise working time and how to estimate them. It is intended to be useful to organisations in support of their budgeting, costing and pricing, rostering, management and supervision and organisational development. Two spreadsheets are also available for use. One shows a worked example of staff time calculated according to the categories in the Guide, and the other is an example of how working time data can be presented in a simple dashboard that everyone can review and discuss.
