Royal Commission examines WA custodial settings

Day 5 of the Royal Commission examined WA government responses to conditions in the Banksia Hill Detention Centre and issues relating to acute mental health support in correctional settings. 

Day 5 opened with a statement from Counsel Assisting recognising the Western Australian Government’s recent commitment to review youth offender laws. This will include stakeholder consultation to determine whether the Young Offenders Act 1994 is continuing to achieve its objectives regarding contemporary issues and trends across the youth justice landscape.
