Royal Commission considers evidence from people with disability who have experienced homelessness

Hearing 26 of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability is focused on people with disability who have experienced homelessness.
Based in Parramatta NSW, the five-day public hearing began with evidence from people with disability who have experienced homelessness or lived in insecure or inadequate housing in New South Wales.
In his opening address, the Honorable Ronald Sackville noted that a lack of access to affordable and appropriate housing for people with disability had been raised as a significant issue throughout previous hearings, including those considering the experience of living in group homes, the interface between disability and the justice system, and the experiences of First Nations peoples. He also noted that despite recent actions of state governments, people with disability are significantly more likely to experience homelessness or be at risk of homelessness than members of the general population.
