8/06/2022

In the morning, the Royal Commission heard from two parents who had divergent views about special schools.

One witness advocated for children with disability to be educated in mainstream schools, suggesting that special schools can signal to their students that they 'belong in a separate place'. Speaking about attitudes, she said she believes children are generally accepting but pick up exclusionary cues from adults. The witness suggested that intervention teams could visit mainstream schools to provide suggestions on how they could be more inclusive.
