DRC hears of ‘everyday abuse’ experienced by people with disability in our public places

During Public Hearing 28: Violence against and abuse of people with disability in public places, the Disability Royal Commission will hear evidence from people with disability who have experienced countless forms of violence and abuse in public places, often at the hands of strangers. The scope of this hearing is to: Â
Counsel assisting set the scene for the hearing, outlining the cumulative negative impact these forms of violence and abuse has on the wellbeing and social inclusion of people with disability. Drawing attention to the Rights and Issues Paper, which examines attitudes towards people with disability, it was acknowledged that the most significant barriers to inclusion for people with disability are not physical, but attitudinal.Â
