Disability Royal Commission hears further reports of abuse and violence in public places
13/10/2022
During Days 2 and 3, the Disability Royal Commission continued to hear about people with disabilityâs experiences of violence and abuse in public places and the impact on their health and wellbeing.Â
The Commission heard from witnesses who are members of The Short Statured People of Australia. Witnesses recounted being âfair gameâ for people in the public with numerous instances of abuse and violence including derogatory sexualised abuse, taunts, harassment, threats of violence, instances of stalking, non-consensual photography and filming, name calling, bullying and non-consensual touching to name a few. This leaves people with disability terrified, traumatised, and in constant fear when interacting with the community in public places. One witness described that âevery move you make is calculated on the social friction you may experience.â Â
