Current complaint mechanisms for abuse fail people with disability

Royal Commission Update

2/12/2022

The Disability Royal Commission has published a report on complaint mechanisms finding limitations in current mechanisms in cases of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability.

The report suggests designs for an accessible, inclusive and independent complaint mechanism for people with disability and recommends a national redress scheme.

According to the report, many of the causes of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability are systematic. Violence prevention will require structural change – changes to institutions, cultures, social practices, attitudes and law – to prevent abuse from being repeated.
