NDS will host two sessions, to help providers understand the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework. The first session will discuss the Standards.

The Child and Youth Safe Standards are a key element of the new legally mandated Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework. The Child and Youth Safe Standards are 10 principles that outline how an organisation can develop a culture with child safety and wellbeing at its centre, and a Universal Principle for Aboriginal Cultural Safety.

The Framework will apply to a wide range of Tasmanian organisations that engage with children and young people from 2024 onwards.

This includes disability services providers who provide services specifically for children and/or young people OR facilities specifically for use by children/and or young people who are under the supervision of the organisation.

The Framework sets out:

  • How organisations prioritise and promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people
  • How organisations respond when there are concerns about a workers’ behaviour towards children and young people engaging with the organisation
  • The importance of independent oversight of how organisations fulfil their obligations under the Framework
  • When it is appropriate or inappropriate to share information concerning a workers’ conduct towards a child or young person

A subsequent one-hour session taking place on Wednesday, 8 November will unpack the other key part of the Framework, the Reportable Conduct Scheme.

About the facilitator:

Speakers from the Department of Justice will introduce the Child and Youth Safe Standards, including the Universal Principle for Aboriginal Cultural Safety. The disability sector will be represented by Mary Mallett the Interim Disability Commissioner, the NDIA and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission who will be available to answer questions about how the new Framework will work along side existing standards.

We are particularly interested in finding out more from frontline workers about which Standards you would especially like the webinar to focus on via a short survey.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone who works in an organisation that supports children or young people in Tasmania.
