Lean Thinking and Practice Series: 3 one-day workshops

NDS invites Strategic Leaders and Managers to this workshop series on Lean Thinking and Practice.

The training is based on the Lean Transformation Model (adapted by John Shook, President of Lean Global network) and is presented by Denise Bennett of Lean Enterprise Australia. Denise has deep experience in the application of Lean in manufacturing, service and healthcare setting, and a sound understanding of how this applies to the disability sector.  The Lean Transformation Model with five key elements that must be addressed in any transformation. This training focuses on the Capability Development pillar of the framework.

With a learning-by-doing approach, participants will bring a process from their workplace that they would like to work on improving throughout the workshop series (delivered across three days).

Day One (24 March) - The basics of Lean Thinking and Practice

Key Topics:
  • Five Principles of Lean Thinking
  • Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) and small step improvement
  • The lean ‘basic’ mindset, practices and tools for creating stability
  • Introduction to structured problem solving using A3 thinking
  • Developing a current state using process mapping and other techniques

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify categories of waste in the work place
  • Create a process map and a hand-off chart
  • Apply the concept of value measurement to key processes within the workplace
  • Triage types of problems that occur in a workplace to enable them to be addressed using the right techniques
  • Integrate Lean Thinking mindset elements into their own practice as leaders
  • Begin an A3 for your problem or process improvement
  • Identify next steps for understanding the current state of your problem/process


Day Two (29 April) - The basics of Lean Problem Solving and Improvement.

Key Topics:

  • Lean Thinking tools to create stability
  • Analysis tools
  • Lean Thinking tools for improving flow and quality
  • Implementing improvement using a Plan-Do-Check-Act approach
  • Measuring improvement over time

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Use the lean foundational tools to increase stability within the workplace
  • Apply basic analysis techniques for problem solving.
  • Develop solutions and countermeasures to improve their process.
  • Determine measures to assess the impact
  • Consider the ‘people’ aspects of process change. 


Day 3 (27 May) - Sustaining improvement with a Daily Management System.

Key Topics:

  • Completing the A3
  • Continuous improvement
  • Introduction to the Lean Management system with a focus on daily management to support continuous improvement
  • Capability Development and coaching

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Implement continuous improvement practices
  • Assess your department / organisation’s status in regard to a lean management system
  • Implement daily huddles within your team or department
  • Implement visual practice to support the system
  • Implement a local recognitions system
  • Provide better coaching to team members
  • Enhance your leadership style to better support the team
