NDS conducts Board and Senior Leader sessions focussing on a broad range of topics relevant to Boards and Senior Leaders. This includes sessions on strengthening Governance, Strategic Planning, and Sustainability.

Through these sessions NDS aims to have experts share insights, raise issues and solutions to assist providers improve their performance.

The CHAP, Governance and Addressing Occupational Violence risks

This session will provide an overview of the Comprehensive Health Assessment Program (CHAP), a tool that addresses barriers to healthcare for people with intellectual disability by prompting health care and screening. The CHAP supports service governance by actively addressing health needs and plays an important role in mitigating one major risk factor in occupational violence – pain and unmet health needs.

The CHAP is now free for all to use and a tool for direct care workers to identify and attend to the health needs of people with intellectual disability. People with intellectual disability have poorer health, are more likely to die prematurely and are also less likely to receive inadequate health promotion advice, when compared to the general population. This session will discuss how a governance approach to the use of CHAP will benefit organisations through improving health outcomes for people with intellectual disability, reducing the risks from unmet health needs and support mitigation for worker occupation violence.

We welcome Professor Nick Lennox, a researcher, educator, advocate, and clinician, as the guest presenter for this session. Professor Lennox has specialised in the health of adults with intellectual disability since 1992, with backgrounds in general practice and psychiatry. In 2007, Nick completed his PhD which involved a randomised controlled trial of the Comprehensive Health Assessment Program (CHAP) and is now a Senior Health Advisor to the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care who have purchased the CHAP for free use across the sector.

Who Should Attend?

NDS recommends that Board Members and Senior Leaders within disability service organisations are most suited to attend.
