NDS has partnered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia to deliver the Quality Use of Medication series for disability services. Quality Use of Medication (QUM) principles and systems are essential to deliver quality and safe services and is included in the NDIS Commission medication practice standard. 

The Quality Use of Medication series includes three webinars:

  • Foundations of Quality Use of Medication in disability services
  • Polypharmacy and reviews
  • Understanding and managing medication refusal

The Quality Use of Medication series is part of the NDS Positive Health Outcomes Project and is funded by the Australian government. 

Webinar One: Foundations of Quality Use of Medications in disability services 

The practical webinar will focus on:

  • Why QUM is important in disability services and how it underpins quality and safe services
  • Breakdown of the NDIS Commission Medication practice standard components, and what good practice would look like in different disability service delivery settings 
  • Organisational systems and governance needed to support QUM
  • Question and answer session

Skill level: Foundational

Webinar Two: Polypharmacy and reviews 

The webinar will focus on: 

  • What is polypharmacy and how does this impact people's health
  • Identifying polypharmacy and people at higher risk of polypharmacy
  • Accessing medication reviews – pathways and appropriate professionals
  • Question and answer session

Skill level: Foundational 

Webinar Three: Understanding and managing refusal of medication

The webinar will focus on: 

  • What is medication refusal and links to NDIS Standard  
  • Risks associated with medication refusal
  • Responding to medication refusal - from supported decision making to escalation of care and clinical governance
  •    Question and answer session  

Skill level: Foundational
