Review of the Disability Services Act 1993 – Interim Report

 

The Disability Services Act 1993 (the Act) is in the process of being reviewed by the Minister for Disability Services pursuant to section 57 of the Act which mandates a review every five years.  The review is a good opportunity for the sector to provide feedback and critique the administrative and legislative framework for the funding and delivery of disability services in Western Australia. Resource Manual on prevention of sexual abuse available

 

NDS WA has developed an information resource ‘Guidelines for the prevention and management of sexual abuse in disability services in Western Australia’. It has been developed to provide clear guidelines to promote safety, prevent sexual assault and improve response strategies to incidents of sexual assault. The project has been funded by the Disability Services Commission through a Quality Service Improvement Grant. The guidelines have been developed by NDS WA through its Accommodation Subcommittee. Group Purchasing Initiative

 

This News Update provides information about Group Purchasing Arrangements (GPA) and is drawn from a project undertaken by NDS WA and funded by the DSC under a grant from the Disability Industry Plan 2005 to 2010. The full report is by clicking here.

New Minister for Disability Services announced

 

The Premier-elect Colin Barnett has announced that Simon O'Brien MLC will be the new Minister for Disability Services and also the Minister for Transport. Mr O’Brien was elected to Parliament for South Metropolitan Region in 1996 and re-elected 2001, 2005 and 2008.

 

He was the Shadow Minister for Disability Services from 9 March 2001 to 4 February 2006. During that time he met with many disability services providers and developed a sound understanding of the issues they faced. Click here to read more...

NDS WA to establish a Finance Advisory Subcommittee

 

NDS WA State Committee has decided to establish a Finance Advisory Subcommittee (FAS) under the Chairmanship of Graham Holman.  With the agreement of COFA’s former Finance Advisory Network (FAN), it is proposed that the new subcommittee will assume the responsibilities that FAN held as well as addressing the major financial issues facing WA disability service providers—such as DSC’s proposed Business Rules review and indexation. Disability coalition calls on major parties for funding and support

 

NDS WA as part of the WA Disability Coalition has co-released a media statement that calls on the major parties for significantly increased support and funding for people with disabilities.

Disability Sector Training Project commences

 

The Disability Sector Training Liaison Project has commenced operating with the appointment of David Rogers.  This NDS WA initiative is funded by the Disability Services Commission (DSC) as a result of The Sector Health Check Committee report, which noted that “effective training and development for support workers is essential to ensure the quality of support for people with disabilities”.

 

As the Disability Sector Training Liaison Coordinator, David Rogers, will liaise between disability service providers, Registered Training Organisations and the Department of Education and Training and ensure that the training needs of the sector are satisfied. Click here to read more...

Labor Disability Election Policy: A boost in ATE funding but nothing for workforce problems

 

The WA Labor Party’s Disability Election Policy has ignored the critical workforce problems facing disability service providers.  While the substantial increase in Alternatives to Employment funding is welcomed, Labor’s failure to acknowledge the sector’s workforce problems is disappointing.

 

NDS WA has consistently pointed out that the most significant issue facing disability service providers is the range of better-remunerated opportunities available in other industries, and that this is resulting in experienced workers leaving the sector - to the detriment of people with disabilities.
